Based on light, regulating quantum materials has important fundamental and technological significance. In optical cavities, the strong coupling between light and matter has recently been studied to correct some of the most clear features.
Today, Florian Dirnberger, Jiamin Quan, Andrea Al ù&Vinod M. Menon, and others from City College of New York in the United States, published an article on Nature, reporting on the magneto-optical properties of van der Waals magnets, which support strong coupling of photons and excitons even without external cavity mirrors.
In this material, namely layered magnetic semiconductor CrSBr, a mixture of emitted light matter known as polaritons, it has been demonstrated that it can significantly increase the spectral bandwidth of the correlation between magnetic, electronic, and optical properties, thereby providing a largely tunable optical response to the applied magnetic field and magnetic oscillator.
This study highlights the importance of exciton photon self mixing in van der Waals magnets and inspires new directions for controlling quantum material properties through strong light matter coupling.
